Last Thursday, we left the O&B base in Aberdeen City Centre and headed out West on the A93 towards the Cambus O’May Hotel where the first of the Deeside Runners Night Race Series was being held.

There’s a certain romance about these kind of races. Some may say the lifeblood of Scottish hill running.

A Victorian-era hotel. £1 entry fee. Variable early December conditions. Trail runners old and new running around a hill in the dark, navigating by way of some reflective canes and a hopefully fully charged head torch, all whilst trying to stay upright. Followed by post-race refreshments by the fire, and a chocolate bunny as a prize. Sounds like a cracking night, right?

It was. Off into the darkness they went, silence fell on the forest start line, and into the hotel we retreated. 31 minutes later, a light emerges from the darkness, then another, and another. One to be remembered.
